About UMR

luckyUnited Maltese Rescue (UMR) is dedicated to the rescue of Maltese dogs of all ages in need of new homes with loving families. We are committed to responsible pet ownership; all of our dogs are spayed, neutered, and current on shots before placement. The rescuers who comprise UMR have been involved in Maltese rescue locally for more than 10 years, but we joined together in the summer of 2000 to work together and serve the D.C. Metropolitan area more effectively.

On October 1, 2001, we became United Maltese Rescue, Inc., an official corporation registered in the State of Maryland!  To celebrate we threw a party...click here for photos.

As of March 2003 United Maltese Rescue is a Non Profit 501 (c) 3 organization.

We currently confine our rescue efforts to the greater Washington, D.C. area (i.e., Maryland, Northern Virginia, and the District of Columbia). However, we will work with any rescue organization or shelter that needs our help to place Maltese in need of permanent or foster homes.

We believe that the future well being of our rescues is our most important responsibility. To meet this obligation, the long-term needs of our dogs are of utmost importance in the adoption process. We believe that if a dog requires re-homing because s/he cannot tolerate life with children or other pets or because s/he has separation anxiety or other issues, our job is to find a new home where such "irritants" do not exist. The welfare of our rescues always takes precedence in the adoption process.

We are always looking for an extra pair of loving hands! If you can volunteer to make home visits, check references, or transport dogs, we would be glad to have you help us. We especially need loving foster homes in our local area. We also sometimes need a foster home outside our area for a few days in an emergency situation. If you'd like to be a UMR volunteer, please email  loden@erols.com. If you think you would like to foster a Maltese, please read our information on foster homes and fill out the Foster Application.

Monetary donations or pet supplies, such as small to medium sized collars, leashes, and sweaters, are also are also appreciated. We often need to spay/neuter our rescues, update shots, and provide heartworm medication and flea preventative. Many times little ones come to us horribly matted and need to have their hair cut to the skin. We always need warm sweaters and tiny t-shirts to keep them comfortable. Any donations can be sent to us at United Maltese Rescue at either of the addresses below.  Any supplies can be sent to these addresses as well, or -- if you live in MD/VA/DC -- we would be more than happy to come and pick them up at your home, office, or other convenient location.

If you want to adopt or need to re-home your Maltese, contact one of the UMR representatives listed below.

Phone numbers will be provided upon receipt of your email.
