Adoption Process

Adopters

If you are interested in adopting a Maltese through UMR, you first must fill out an application. We request both personal and veterinary references and will perform a home visit prior to adoption to ensure you will provide a safe and loving environment for our dogs.

We place dogs ONLY in the MD/VA/DC area and within a 2-hour drive of our local area. This is to ensure that we can make home visits to each adopting family and provide post-adoption assistance, if needed. We do not adopt to homes where there are children under 10 years of age. There are NO exceptions to this policy as it is for the safety of our dogs. Our adoption fee is $250. This fee is payable when the adoption process is finalized, and we transfer ownership of your rescue Maltese from UMR to you.

Adopting a dog is a long term commitment. Please read our "Let's Talk Commitment" page  to see if adopting a dog is the right thing for your family.  Also, take a look at Pet Columnist, Cindy Wolff's article about owners' duty to their pets for another perspective on responsible pet ownership.

Owners Wishing to Give Up A Maltese

If you have a Maltese that you would like us to place for you, please contact one of the UMR representatives listed on the About Us page. You must obtain and complete a form releasing your dog to UMR for placement, fill it out, sign it, and send it to us through the U.S. mail.

We also ask that you provide current vet records and a photo of your dog that we can post on our site. If you do not have a current photo, we will be happy to arrange a time to take a digital photo of your dog. If you cannot keep your dog in his home until placement, we often can arrange for foster care.
