Nugget's story

Nugget came to us from a shelter. His owner had used him as a stud dog, but apparently (at age 4) he'd outlived his usefulness, so she no longer wanted him around. One of our foster moms took Nugget in and got him neutered. But Nugget's whole life had revolved around breeding, so he wouldn't leave the foster mom's dogs alone - maybe because he thought he had fulfill his only purpose in life in order to stay.

She tried to make it work, but after a few days it became clear that Nugget needed to be in a home where there were no other dogs. Since all of our foster parents had other dogs of their own or were fostering for us, we decided to see if our applicants, Rick and Kevin, would foster Nugget until we could place him. They talked it over and decided that they could provide a good foster situation for him.

Nugget's New Beginning . . .

Nugget found his new home and New Beginning in record time. The guys picked up Nugget at about mid-day on a Saturday. On Sunday I had a call from them asking if they could adopt him. Both Rick and Kevin thought Nugget was the perfect addition to their home. He had "settled down" quite well, wasn't exhibiting any marking behaviors, and seemed to have forgotten his previous need to try to make babies.

Because they had wanted to adopt a Maltese for quite some time, Nugget became a huge part of their lives, going with them whenever possible. Nugget even came to the UMR Incorporation party in October. What a happy boy he is! We are thankful that Kevin and Rick didn't take more than a minute to say "Yep. We will come and get that boy and care for him as long as you need us to."

And we are ever so happy that Nugget has a real home where his only "purpose" is to be babied and loved. Thankfully, Nugget will never have to make another baby as long as he lives. He deserves the best and we know that with Rick and Kevin he will always have a wonderful life.

2003 Nugget Update!

nugget 2003 valentine

This is a letter from Nugget's family, Rick and Keven:

"Thought you might like this. It was the valentine Nugget sent to his family this year. He's come a long way from those pictures in "Nugget's story"! Nugget is enjoying his retirement from the puppy farm. He loves to sit on his special bench and look out the window, protecting us from the squirrels in the backyard. His favorite things are to fetch his tennis balls, play tug of war and to go for long walks with his best friend, Duke, the Pug next door.

All the best,
Rick & Kevin"
